Phonics Teaching
At St Francis CE Primary School, we believe that all our children can become fluent readers and writers.
We are currently exploring a new DfE validated systematic synthetic phonics programme in Nursery and Reception, Supersonic Phonic Friends:
We have chosen this scheme for the following reasons:
- Child friendly characters and illustrations underpin the scheme. They are easy to remember with accompanying rhyming phrases.
- The scheme is committed to supporting child-led learning and the idea ‘play is the way’ in the Early Years Foundation Stage.
- Every lesson is fun and engaging. The lessons are enriched with movement, a fundamental pre-writing skill and maximising learning connections.

In Key Stage 1 and above we use the DfE validated systematic synthetic phonics programme, Little Wandle
The Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised progression ensures children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school. As a result, all our children are able to tackle any unfamiliar words as they read.

At St Francis CE Primary School, we also model the application of the alphabetic code through phonics in shared reading and writing, both inside and outside of the phonics lesson and across the curriculum. We have a strong focus on language development for our children because we know that speaking and listening are crucial skills for reading and writing in all subjects.
Phonics is taught daily by the class teacher and teaching assistants with top-up sessions provided for those children requiring additional support. All staff delivering phonics sessions are fully trained and receive regular refreshers to ensure consistency and quality of provision.
