Assessment is an important part of school life at St Francis Church of England Primary School. Teachers use the information obtained through assessment to inform them of the achievement of pupils and to help them plan next steps. 

Assessment for learning - Formative Assessment

One of our highest priorities is for teachers to check the progress of their pupils during the lesson and take immediate action to secure positive outcomes. This may take the form of:

• A mini plenary
• One to one or small group questioning
• TA observations/ comments
• Peer or self-assessment

Alongside this, we use a range of other assessment strategies to give pupils regular feedback and provide us with the information required to plan future learning opportunities. To achieve this, we use a range of strategies:

• In the moment verbal feedback to children 
• Marking and Feedback
• National statutory tests and tasks
• Teacher and TA observations
• Annual reports
• Learning Journeys and Foundation Stage profiles
• Formal and informal termly teacher assessments

Assessment of learning - summative assessment 

At St Francis we use the information on our assessment documents, which link directly to the national curriculum, to make summative judgements of pupil learning. We also use standardised tests 3 times a year from Year 1 to Year 6 so that we can measure progress. These tests are used in all ODST schools.
